Greater Cincinnati Water Works
Major Projects

Projects add value and service for customers.

GCWW goals include optimizing treatment and operations to provide high-quality water. We also strive to be a leader in regional solutions to improve water quality and supply. Some  projects helping us achieve these goals are:

Dana Avenue Water Main Replacement Plan

A water main replacement program is now under way along Dana Avenue. Greater Cincinnati Water Works is replacing about 9,300 feet of water main along Dana east of Victory Parkway and north of I-71. The new water mains will provide additional water capacity, improve water flow for fire protection needs and improve water quality for Xavier University and the surrounding area. The project is expected to be finished in mid- to late July.  In conjunction with the water main replacements, the City of Cincinnati will repave roads and make other street enhancements.

GCWW proactively replaces over 30 miles of aging water mains each year, which represents about 1 percent of its distribution system.

Madison Road Corridor & Blue Ash Corridor Projects

In 1999, engineers at GCWW created a 'Master Plan' to identify water mains needing to be installed or replaced in order to maintain the integrity of the water system. Because of the aging infrastructure along the Madison Road Corridor and the need for increased water capacity, GCWW is replacing the old 16" and 36" water mains with new 16" and 48" mains within the street. Technically, there are seven phases to this project, which include improvements along Grandin Road from Edwards Road to Madison Road and along Madison Road from Grandin Road to Ridge Road. The Grandin Road phase is now complete, but some others are still under construction or scheduled to be under construction through 2012.

UV Treatment At Miller Treatment Plant

Construction is now under way on a $30 million 19,600 square foot Ultraviolet (UV) Disinfection Treatment Facility at GCWW's Richard Miller Treatment Plant. City officials broke ground on the project in November 2010. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has identified UV disinfection as one of the best technologies to protect against certain contaminants in drinking water such as Cryptosporidium. When operational, GCWW will be the largest water utility in North America to use UV following sand filtration, and Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) adsorption. The project is scheduled to be finished in 2013.

Kemper Road Tank

The Kemper Road Tank will be located in Sycamore Township and will support the immediate areas near the tank, as well as Mason and eventually Lebanon. After a year of designing the three million gallon elevated tank, construction is scheduled to begin the summer of 2011. Completion will be in early 2013.

Eden Park Standby Generator

The power outage in Northeast Ohio in August 2003 spawned the idea of providing backup power (i.e. backup generators) at our critical facilities. The Eden Park pump station, being prioritized as the third most critical, uses GCWW's largest reservoir which is located under Mirror Lake to supply water to the City's customers. This pump station serves the Central Corridor of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, including the hospitals in Clifton. The design process is complete and installation of the generator will begin in Fall 2011 and end sometime in Spring 2012.

Water Service to Lebanon and South Lebanon

Construction work to lay more than 23,000 feet of pipe to provide water service to the City of Lebanon and Village of South Lebanon is now under way. By partnering with GCWW, both communities will receive increased water quality and reliability to meet future water demands. A pump station will also be built to deliver water to both Lebanon and South Lebanon. The project kicked off in 2009 and is scheduled to be completed by 2013. However, service to either community may start in the fall of 2012, if projects are completed ahead of schedule.

Greenhills Tank

Construction on the Greenhills Tank in Forest Park began in the Spring of 2010. The reservoir will be built on top of a 30 foot embankment to provide sufficient pressure/pressure equalization. The Greenhills Tank will provide water storage for the Northern part of Hamilton County. Also included in this project is a landscape beautification effort that will surround the reservoir and provide the community with a pleasant facility.
